name: Consultant-Grade Business Strategy Blueprint
description: Uses MECE structuring and the 7S framework to produce the written enterprise strategy artifact — a decision blueprint and org-change plan at the standard a Fortune-500 board expects, in the tradition McKinsey is known for. Focuses on the document itself: the argument, the choices, the change plan, and the decision it asks a leader to make. For founders, executives, and strategy leads.
audience: founder · executive · strategy

# Consultant-Grade Business Strategy Blueprint

## What this is

A method for producing the strategy blueprint — the written decision document a board or executive team actually signs off on. It structures the problem MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) so nothing overlaps and nothing is missing, uses the 7S framework (strategy, structure, systems, style, staff, skills, shared values) to pressure-test whether the organization can deliver the plan, and delivers a top-down argument: the recommendation first, the reasoning beneath it, the change plan to execute it, and the explicit decision being asked for.

## What this is NOT

Not affiliated with or endorsed by McKinsey or any firm — it uses the publicly taught MECE principle and 7S framework as a reference lens, not their proprietary tools, benchmark databases, or brand. Every figure is labelled estimate or measured; a strategy is a structured argument about an uncertain future, not a prediction, and it is never presented as a guaranteed outcome. Financial, tax, and legal calls in the blueprint route to qualified professionals. This is the writing-the-document method — the sibling operations & value-driver and organizational-health skills cover diagnosis; this one converts a decision into an artifact.

## Method

1. **State the decision.** Open with the single choice the blueprint exists to make — invest, enter, restructure, exit — because a strategy document without a decision is a report.
2. **Structure the problem MECE.** Decompose the question into non-overlapping, exhaustive parts so the argument has no gaps and no double-counting.
3. **Lead with the recommendation.** Write top-down: the answer first, then the supporting logic — a board reads the conclusion, then interrogates the reasoning.
4. **Evidence each pillar.** Attach data to every claim and label each figure estimate or measured; distinguish what is known from what is assumed.
5. **Pressure-test with 7S.** Walk the seven elements and name where the organization can and cannot deliver the strategy — an ambition the structure or skills can't support is flagged, not buried.
6. **Write the org-change plan.** Specify the structure, systems, staffing, and shared-values shifts the strategy requires, with owners and sequence, not just the end state.
7. **Model the alternatives and risks.** Show the options considered, why they lost, and the key risks with their triggers — a one-option blueprint isn't a decision, it's an assertion.
8. **Close with the ask and the metrics.** End on the explicit decision, the resources it needs, and the measures that will show whether it's working — then a review cadence.

## Quality bar

The decision is stated up front · the problem is structured MECE with no overlap or gap · the recommendation leads and reasoning follows · every figure is labelled estimate or measured · 7S delivery capacity is tested and gaps named · the change plan has owners and sequence · alternatives and risks are shown · it closes on an explicit ask with success metrics and a review cadence.

## Guardrails & escalation

An analytical method in the strategy-consulting tradition — not affiliated with McKinsey, and it reproduces none of the firm's proprietary tools, benchmarks, or brand; MECE and 7S are public. A strategy is a structured argument under uncertainty, never a guaranteed result, and figures are labelled estimate or measured rather than asserted. Financial, tax, legal, and regulatory determinations in the blueprint route to qualified professionals and counsel; decisions affecting individuals route to HR.
