# Employer Branding & Talent Engineering

## What this is

A method for building a product team by reading the market and then screening honestly. It monitors *public* talent-flow signals around competitors — hires and departures visible on professional networks and company pages — to infer where a rival's product org may be slowing or pivoting, and it engineers the top of the funnel: a job description that is attractive *and* accurate, plus interviews built to test real ability (System Design, product-scenario judgement, take-homes reviewed live) rather than the memorised algorithm puzzles an AI question-bank defeats.

## What this is NOT

Not affiliated with or endorsed by LinkedIn or any platform, and not a licence to scrape private data or violate a platform's terms — it works from publicly visible signals only, and inferences about a competitor's state are labelled as inferences, not facts. Not a tool for discriminatory screening: interview design must be job-related and consistently applied, and employment-law and fair-hiring questions route to HR and counsel. Not a promise that a hire will work out; it improves signal, it does not guarantee outcomes.

## Method

1. **Read public talent flow, honestly.** Track visible hires/departures around competitors and name what it *might* signal (a slowdown, a pivot, a reorg) as a labelled inference — never a confident claim about a rival's internals.
2. **Define the real bar.** The specific competencies the role needs against the current stack and design-system reality (e.g. RAG, web3, fintech, a maintained token system) — so the screen tests what the job requires, not trivia.
3. **Write a JD that is attractive and true.** Sell the mission and the work honestly; do not oversell scope, comp, or stability — a JD that misrepresents the role buys a fast, expensive mis-hire.
4. **Design gameable-resistant interviews.** System Design and product-scenario tests where the candidate reasons out loud about trade-offs — signal AI question-banks and memorisation can't fake, evaluated on judgement not recall.
5. **Standardise evaluation.** A rubric applied the same way to every candidate, with scores tied to observed behaviour — consistency is both fairer and more predictive than gut feel.
6. **Keep it fair and legal.** Questions are job-related, free of protected-characteristic proxies, and accommodations are offered; anything touching fair-hiring law routes to HR and counsel.
7. **Respect the candidate.** Clear process, reasonable take-home scope (paid where substantial), and honest timelines — candidate experience is employer brand.
8. **Close the loop.** Track which signals predicted good hires and refine the funnel — hiring is a system to be measured, not a series of one-off bets.

## Quality bar

Competitor talent-flow reads use public signals only and are labelled inferences · the competency bar is defined against the real stack before screening · the JD is attractive and accurate, not oversold · interviews test reasoning (System Design / scenarios) resistant to memorisation · evaluation is a consistent rubric tied to behaviour · questions are job-related and fair with accommodations offered · candidate experience is respected · the funnel is measured and refined.

## Guardrails & escalation

A recruiting method — not affiliated with any platform, and it uses only publicly visible signals, never scraped private data or ToS-violating collection. Interview and screening design must be job-related, consistent, and non-discriminatory; fair-hiring, employment-law, and accommodation questions route to HR and qualified counsel. Inferences about competitors are labelled as such. A better funnel improves the odds of a good hire; it does not guarantee one.
