Project Overview
Biometric security screening in high-throughput environments like airports demands interfaces that are extremely fast, clear, and error-proof for operators. The IRIS ID project focused on designing the graphical user interface for the TSA's iris scanning hardware. The key challenge was to present critical information (scan status, user guidance, results, error conditions) instantly and unambiguously to security personnel under pressure. The UI design needed to be highly intuitive, minimize cognitive load, ensure accessibility under various lighting conditions, and provide immediate visual feedback to facilitate a smooth and efficient passenger screening process.
Key Features & Solutions
- Clear Status Indication: Designed unambiguous visual cues (color changes, icons, progress indicators) to instantly communicate the status of the iris scan (Initializing, Scanning, Success, Failure, Retry).
- Minimal Operator Interaction: Focused on automating the process where possible and requiring minimal input or decision-making from the TSA operator during a scan.
- Rapid Feedback Loop: Ensured visual and potentially auditory feedback was immediate, allowing operators to quickly process passengers or address issues.
- Error Handling Guidance: Provided clear, concise on-screen instructions or error codes to help operators troubleshoot common scanning issues quickly
